It is often said that 'the most beautiful instrument in the world is the human voice.' Here are five young artists who have taken their first confident steps toward the world with only their voices.

Korea's first Korean traditional music a cappella group 'Toris' has finally released their first official album. Toris was founded in 2008 by majors in Korean traditional vocal music such as pansori, minyo (folk songs), and jeongga, and has since attempted and presented various performances based on tradition. In particular, it is a group that began to receive attention by winning the Grand Prize at the 3rd 21C Korean Music Project in 2009 with 'Abureisuna,' a Tongmyeong farming song from Yecheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

The theme of this album, 'Beginning,' is said to encompass both the meaning of the first stage of an endeavor and the meaning of taking on the challenge of attempting various works. This album consists of music centered on the melodies and rhythms of Korean traditional music that 'Toris' has worked on previously, as well as tracks that reinterpret traditional music with new melodies. Communicating music that brings out the natural charm of our sound as it is, without forcibly tidying up or embellishing it, can be said to be the essence of the music pursued by 'Toris.'

The album features a total of seven tracks: 'Sarangga,' 'Arirang Medley,' 'Ganggangsullae,' 'Chingching,' 'Kkaturi,' 'Gangnam Arirang,' and 'Naratmalssami.' From 'Sarangga,' the charming love story of Yi Mong-ryong and Chunhyang from the pansori Chunhyangga; 'Arirang Medley,' sung as a medley of Arirang representing Gangwon-do, Gyeongsang-do, and Jeolla-do; 'Ganggangsullae,' which was sung while gazing at the moonlight with wishes and hopes for the year; 'Chingching,' giving a fresh coat to the widely popular Gyeongsang-do folk song Kwaejina Chingching Nane; 'Kkaturi,' adding dynamism to Kkaturi Taryeong, which portrays the mountain terrain and place names of various regions across the Korean Peninsula; 'Gangnam Arirang,' which yearned for the arrival of a new spring amidst the painful suffering under Japanese colonial rule; to 'Naratmalssami,' which holds King Sejong the Great's heart for his people—our precious treasures have been reinterpreted in Toris's own color.

흔히들 ‘세상에서 가장 아름다운 악기는 사람의 목소리’라고 이야기한다. 여기 목소리만으로 세상을 향해 당당히 첫 발을 내딛은 다섯명의 젊은이가 있다.

한국 최초의 국악아카펠라그룹 ‘토리스’가 드디어 공식 첫 앨범을 발매하였다. 토리스는 2008년에 판소리, 민요, 정가 등의 국악성악 전공자들로 창단되어 그동안 전통을 바탕으로 한 다양한 공연을 시도하고 선보였다. 특히 2009년 제3회 21C 한국음악프로젝트에서 경상북도 예천의 통명농요 ‘아부레이수나’로 대상을 받으며 주목받기 시작한 그룹이다.

이번 앨범의 주제인 ‘시작’은 어떠한 일의 첫 단계라는 의미와 다양한 작품을 시도한다는 도전의 의미를 모두 포함한 것이라 한다. 이번 앨범에는 기존에 ‘토리스’가 작업하여온 국악의 멜로디와 리듬을 중심으로 한 음악과 전통음악을 새로운 멜로디로 재해석하는 곡들로 구성된다. 억지로 정돈하고 꾸며내고자 하지 않고, 있는 그대로의 우리소리의 매력을 살리면서 소통하는 음악이 바로 ‘토리스’가 추구하는 음악의 본질이라 할 수 있다.

앨범수록 곡으로는 사랑가, 아리랑연곡, 강강술래, 칭칭, 까투리, 강남아리랑, 나랏말싸미까지 총7곡이 있다. 판소리 춘향가 중 이묭룡과 춘향의 아기자기한 사랑이야기인 ‘사랑가’, 강원도, 경상도, 전라도를 대표하는 아리랑을 연곡으로 부르는 아리랑연곡, 한해의 소원과 염원을 담아 달빛을 보며 노래하였던 ‘강강술래’, 경상도민요로 대중적으로 잘 알려진 쾌지나 칭칭나네에 새 옷을 입힌 ‘칭칭’, 한반도 여러지역의 산세와 지명을 잘 표현한 까투리타령에 역동성을 더한 ‘까투리’, 일제치하의 뼈아픈 고통 속에서 새 봄이 오기를 염원하였던 ‘강남아리랑’, 세종대왕의 백성을 향한 마음이 담긴 ‘나랏말싸미’까지 소중한 우리의 보물을 토리스의 색깔로 재해석 하였다.
