Zenith 1st Full-Length Album 'Voice Box'

Marking their 10th anniversary of formation this year, the pinnacle of Korean popular a cappella, Zenith, officially releases their 1st full-length album "Voice Box" simultaneously across record shops nationwide and various music streaming sites on November 29, 2018.

The title tracks are double title tracks, 'Ice Coffee' and 'I Need Sunlight'. The first title track 'Ice Coffee' captures the small everyday life of a person who orders only 'ice coffee' at a cafe every day to meet their unrequited crush; leader Eric Kim wrote the lyrics and composed it in 2010, and it premiered at the Korea A Cappella Festival. The second title track 'I Need Sunlight' was created most recently, setting the emotions a man feels when in love to a light band rhythm in the form of a confession and monologue. Kim Min-gu (Zenith's tenor) took on the lead vocal, and the theme of the famous classical piece 'Canon Variations' is inserted in the outro.

Track 1 'In the Center of the World' contains a cinematic soundtrack-like intro combining Eastern philosophy and Irish styles alongside Zenith's musical experimentation, reflecting the philosophical thought that humans are also part of Mother Nature. Track 2 'Swing With The Zenith' delightfully expresses in Korean the swing of jazz vocal groups like New York's 'The Manhattan Transfer' that Zenith pursues, composed of diverse ad-libs that allow listeners to glimpse the skills of each vocalist within relatively simple chords. Track 4 'Well Done' is a comfort song inspired by listening to Rooftop Moonlight's 'Good Job Today, Too'. It is a song in which Zenith delivers warm praise to everyone wrapping up a hard day's work, with Anna (Zenith's soprano) taking on the solo. Track 6 'Welcome Together Party' can be called an exciting funky dance track based on Kim Se-hee's (Zenith's soprano) explosive vocal ability. Based on the simple message of 'Let's enjoy music together!', it will deliver musical joy. Track 7 'Chopsticks March' is a remake track where Eric Kim's arrangement stands out, being variations in four movements on the piano piece 'The Celebrated Chop Waltz' that anyone might have played. The 1st movement presents the theme, led by the soprano which is a characteristic of co-ed a cappella. The 2nd movement has a lyrical feel with a composition reminiscent of playing string instruments; the 3rd movement brings out minor and major moods in a circus style; and the final 4th movement emphasizes instrumental expressions such as wind instruments and guitar while the bass plays the theme. Track 8 is a remake version of the hit song 'Taking the Train', which was already released as a single in 2014 and can be sung along to by anyone who knows Zenith. While not a live recording, it is the version that Zenith actually sings on live stages, neatly arranged so that many people can sing along to the altered version. Track 9 is Zenith's 2012 debut song and shares the title of the movie in which Eric Kim and Kim Min-gu starred as leads, 'Giant Tree'. Maximizing the lyrical feel of the beginning while mobilizing a choir in the latter half, it is dynamically arranged up to the magnificent feel that the song suggests. The final Track 10 is a song that captures the 'happy moments' felt by humans, expressing the relaxed mindset of the members purely through ad-libs. The reason this track is placed last especially suggests both the comfort of wrapping up this album and the anticipation heralding a 2nd album.

All songs included in Zenith's first album, with the exception of 1 remake song, are works written by leader Eric Kim from 2006 to 2018, captured through the voices of soprano Anna, alto Kim Se-hee, tenor Kim Min-gu, and baritone Yeon Gyu-hwan. In particular, this album is all the more meaningful as Anders Edenroth, leader of the world-renowned Swedish a cappella group 'The Real Group', participated as a mastering producer. It is hoped that listeners will feel the charm of a cappella music and the small happiness of everyday life through Zenith's 1st album 'Voice Box'.

제니스(Zenith) 정규 1집 [목소리 상자]

올 해로 결성 10주년을 맞은 한국 대중 아카펠라의 정점, 제니스(Zenith)가 2018년 11월 29일, 전국의 레코드 샵과 각종 음원 사이트 동시에 1집 "목소리 상자"를 전격 발매한다.

타이틀 곡은 더블 타이틀로 ‘아이스 커피’와 ‘햇살이 필요해’이다. 첫 번째 타이틀 곡 ‘아이스 커피’는 짝사랑 하는 상대를 만나기 위해 매일 카페에서 '아이스 커피'만 주문하는 한 사람의 소소한 일상을 담은 내용으로 2010년 리더 에릭킴이 작사, 작곡 했으며, 한국 아카펠라 페스티벌에서 초연 되었다.
두 번째 타이틀 곡 ‘햇살이 필요해’는 가장 최근에 탄생 했으며, 남자가 사랑 할 때 갖는 마음을 고백과 독백의 형식으로 가벼운 밴드 리듬에 실었다. 김민구(제니스 테너)가 리드 보컬을 맡았고, 후주에는 유명한 클래식곡 '캐논 변주곡'의 테마가 삽입되어 있다.

1번 트랙 ‘세상의 중심에서’는 동양적인 사상과 아이리쉬를 결합한 영화 음악 같은 인트로와 제니스의 음악적 실험성이 담겨 있으며, 사람도 대 자연의 일부라는 철학적 사상을 반영하고 있다.
2번 트랙 ‘Swing With The Zenith’는 제니스가 추구 하는 뉴욕 '맨하탄 트랜스퍼' 같은 재즈 보컬 그룹의 스윙을 한국어로 재미있게 풀어 냈으며, 비교적 쉬운 코드 안에서 각 보컬들의 기량을 엿볼 수 있는 다양한 에들립으로 구성되어 있다.
4번 트랙 ‘참 잘했어요’는 ‘옥상달빛’의 ‘수고했어, 오늘도’를 듣고, 영감을 받은 위로송이다. 힘든 하루 일과를 마감하는 모든 이들에게 제니스가 따뜻한 칭찬을 전하는 곡이며, 애나(제니스 소프라노)가 솔로를 맡았다.
6번 트랙 ‘Welcome Together Party’은 김세희(제니스 소프라노)의 폭발적인 가창력을 기반으로 신나는 펑키 댄스곡이라고 할 수 있다. '함께 음악을 즐기자!' 라는 단순한 내용을 바탕으로 음악적인 즐거움을 선사 할 것이다.
7번 트랙 ‘젓가락 행진곡’은 에릭킴의 편곡이 돋보이는 리메이크 곡으로, 누구가 연주 해 봤을 피아노 곡 'The Celebratated Chop Waltz'을 4악장으로 구성한 변주곡이다. 1악장은 주제를 제시하고 있고, 혼성 아카펠라의 특징인 소프라노가 리드하고 있다. 2악장은 서정적인 느낌이며, 현악기를 연주하는 듯한 구성이며, 3악장은 단조와 장조의 느낌을 서커스풍으로 살렸고, 마지막 4악장은 베이스가 주제를 연주하면서 관악기와 기타 등 악기적인 표현을 강조하였다.
8번 트랙은 2014년에 싱글로 이미 발표 되었던, 제니스를 알고 있는 사람이면 누구나 부를 수도 있는 히트곡 ‘기차타고’의 리메이크 버전이다. 라이브 실황은 아니지만, 실제 제니스가 라이브 현장에서 부르는 버전이며, 많은 사람들이 변화된 버전을 따라 부를 수 있도록 정돈 되어 있다.
9번 트랙은 제니스의 2012년 데뷔곡이자, 에릭킴과 김민구가 주인공으로 출연했던, 영화 제목과 같은 ‘Giant Tree’이다. 초반의 서정적인 느낌을 극대화 함과 동시에 뒷부분에서 콰이어를 동원하여 노래가 시사하고 있는 웅장한 느낌까지 다이나믹하게 편곡 되었다.
마지막 10번 트랙은 사람이 느끼는 ‘행복한 순간’을 담아 멤버들의 여유로운 마음을 순수 에드립만으로 담은 곡이다. 특별히 이 트랙이 마지막인 이유는 이 음반을 마무리 하는 편안함과 동시에, 2집을 예고 하는 기대감을 시사한다.

제니스가 첫 음반에 담은 모든 곡은 1곡의 리메이크를 제외 하고, 2006년부터 2018년까지 리더 에릭킴이 쓴 작품이며, 소프라노 애나, 알토 김세희, 테너 김민구, 바리톤 연규환의 목소리로 담아 내었다.
특별히 이 음반에 스웨덴 출신의 세계적인 아카펠라 그룹 '리얼그룹(The Real Group)'의 리더 엔더스 에덴로스(Anders Edenroth)가 마스터링 프로듀서로 참여하여 더욱 의미가 있다. 제니스 1집 ‘목소리 상자’를 통해서 듣는 사람들로 하여금 아카펠라 음악의 매력과 소소한 일상의 행복을 느꼈으면 하는 바람이다.
