A Cappella Reborn Within Music Education
Over the next four posts, I will write about a cappella education in greater depth.
I hope this will be helpful to those who wish to study a cappella education and music education deeply.

A Cappella Reborn Within Music Education
A cappella is a form of musical expression. However, many people still do not know the correct definition and characteristics of a cappella. This is regrettable, especially given the growing educational and social roles that a cappella holds.
A cappella in Korea is growing in a slightly different manner from its development process in other countries, and within that, ‘education’ serves as a crucial pillar.
‘A Cappella Education’
First of all, in discussing a cappella education, there are many points to deliberate regarding definitions, such as teaching a cappella versus teaching through a cappella, but here I intend to discuss both broadly, encompassing both aspects.
In this post, I will reaffirm the educational value of a cappella and examine what meaning a cappella can carry as education in the future.
1. Viewing from Music Pedagogy
Since medieval Europe, a cappella has continued through developments in sacred music such as Gregorian chant and polyphonic chant, as well as developments in secular music such as madrigals and glees. A cappella, once a musical form of expression, began to be utilized in various music education settings around the world in the late 19th century, which also influenced the development of contemporary a cappella compositions.
Therefore, to reaffirm the educational and social value of a cappella, let us look for traces of a cappella in the world's leading music pedagogical methods.
A. A Cappella in Choral Education
Choral education provides the experience of singing together with proper posture and breathing through choral singing, and through the activity of singing, students realize the beauty of music and experience balance and harmony. Furthermore, it is a music education activity that allows students to express music under the conductor's direction and foster expressiveness and creativity through sustained experience.
In choral singing, the activity of creating chords makes listening to each other's pitches and tuning pitch accuracy extremely important; during this process, each vocal part must be mindful of pitch intervals and strive to produce notes at the correct pitch. Additionally, in activities that establish relative pitch, the pitches of other vocal parts play a vital role, making practice in listening to one another's notes and vocalizing essential.
This is difficult to practice alone with melodic instruments such as recorders, flutes, or violins, and there are limitations even with instruments capable of playing chords, such as guitars and pianos. Therefore, exercises involving vocalizing and matching harmonies solely with the voice are primarily used, for which a cappella pieces and practice methods are in great demand. Simple cadential singing is widely used to practice basic chord structures and cadences, and easy a cappella pieces are primarily used for choir warm-ups and vocal exercises.
In this way, choral education has played a role in establishing the compositional form of a cappella within various musical (or music-educational) activities.
B. A Cappella in the Kodály Method
Hungarian music educator and composer Zoltán Kodály (1882–1967) stated that through group singing activities using solfège and lyrics based on Hungarian folk songs, students could acquire comprehensive musical knowledge and build a foundation for holistic character development.
Thus, in the Kodály method, numbered notation, hand signs, flying notes (finger staves), and related techniques—primarily using simple scales including folk pentatonic scales—were highly developed. Moreover, Kodály emphasized a pedagogical approach that connected singing activities not just to a single vocal part, but to multi-part activities of two or more voices, improving inner hearing as students sang together.
This became the reason why a cappella activities—where the blending of voices matters more than using instruments—took center stage, providing the impetus to create various a cappella pieces for use in teaching methods.
As such, the Kodály method provided a theoretical foundation for a cappella in music education through singing with relative pitch and the emphasis on multi-part choral singing.
C. A Cappella in Orff Schulwerk
German music educator and composer Carl Orff (1895–1982) believed that music belongs to all children regardless of ability and age, emphasizing that music education methods following the natural course of human evolution and utilizing both the body and language are essential. While prior European music education was targeted at exceptionally talented children, Orff stated that all children could experience music easily and enjoyably, cultivating creative musicality.
Consequently, it consists of activities creating body percussion ensembles and music theater based on language, music, repetition, dance, recitation, and body percussion, utilizing simple yet engaging pedagogical methods such as various imitation activities, ostinatos, and borduns.
These served as practical examples demonstrating how practical-sound-centered activities can expand and be applied in music classes.
Diverse timbres of instruments, body percussion, and linguistic expressions proved that countless elements beyond traditional instruments like the piano or violin can become subject matter for music education and possess musical-educational value.
In this way, Orff Schulwerk is meaningful in showing the potential for a cappella to be utilized broadly in education.
D. A Cappella in Gordon's Audiation Pedagogy
American music educator Edwin E. Gordon (1912–1991) developed Music Learning Theory alongside various scholars. He stated that everyone possesses musical aptitude, and the direction of music education is to help develop audiation, the foundation of individual musicality. Being capable of audiation means understanding music rhythmically, tonally, and harmonically, being able to listen, write, and anticipate music based on experienced knowledge, and being able to sing within tonality and meter without accompaniment.
Thus, active music listening and singing experiences through audiation greatly aid in understanding music, and this influences not only musical ability but also character, promoting holistic growth.
This indicates that singing is not merely an outcome composed of sound and pronunciation, but possesses holistic educational value, demonstrating that a learner's active, systematic, and diverse responses while singing can cultivate both musicality and character evenly.
In this manner, Gordon's audiation pedagogy provides an academic framework establishing that a cappella music education relates not only to the development of musicality, but also to various aspects of character and social development.
2.Current Status of A Cappella Education Usage
Most of Korea's a cappella population originated from choir and vocal ensemble communities. Furthermore, over the past 10 years, many professional musicians who previously focused on vocals, composition, or instrumental music have entered the field, and many people have become interested in and joined a cappella after watching mainstream pop singers. Some of these individuals have made a cappella education their profession, and some music education majors are also teaching a cappella.
Let us then examine the current state of how a cappella education is taking place in Korea.
A. Experiential Programs
Experiential programs are mainly used in corporate training or arts and cultural education programs.
A portion of a song composed of simple chords is further simplified and arranged into two or three parts, and when instructed, an easily accessible approach using repetition and simplification is taken. At this time, movement or lyric alteration adds fun.
Songs such as ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ or ‘Let’s Go on a Trip’ are primarily used, and recently, chord-loop songs widely used globally are also utilized. Sometimes, lyrics and one or two notes are simply written on one or two sheets of paper so that participants can sing easily without memorizing.
B. Multi-Part Singing Classes
A cappella education is also utilized in school multi-part singing classes.
When pieces with parallel motion, oblique motion, or contrary motion in 3rds or 6ths appear, two-handed signs, solfège rods, and staff notes are utilized, and for multi-part pieces in call-and-response or counter-melody forms, practice pieces like echo songs and question-and-answer songs are practiced. In addition, multi-part choral singing is practiced through methods adapted from cadential singing, such as ‘creating harmonies by agreeing on chord signs.’
Beyond this, easy rounds or same-chord songs are widely utilized in the form of multi-part singing classes.
C. Utilization in Instructing A Cappella Practice Pieces
It is also utilized when teaching a cappella practice pieces in clubs or learning a cappella lesson pieces during music class hours.
In this case, learners have the objective of learning a piece within a given time. If instructional time is short, simple pieces can be used, but pieces must be selected and practiced according to the characteristics and scale of the performance. Individual capability and teamwork among members are important; during this process, practice methods for various types of rhythm, pitch, vocalization, and expression are used to elevate the entire team's musical level.
Once a song is completed to some extent, specialized practice begins to polish the piece. Such practice is similar to professional musicians' rehearsal methods, finely tuning expression, diction, and breathing. At times, rehearsals on microphone technique and stage presence are also conducted.
3. Proposing Future Directions for A Cappella Education
A cappella is merely one form of musical expression. Moreover, many people still do not know well what a cappella is. Although a cappella is becoming known to many through ongoing movements across various fields such as popular music, classical music, and jazz, there are still many limitations within this narrow scope of activity. Therefore, for a cappella to develop and find its meaning, it must certainly be integrated with education.
A. Attempts with Diverse Research Projects
Diverse research projects must be attempted to develop on-site application cases based on the theoretical foundations of a cappella.
Research projects and arts & culture education implementation projects by the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service can secure instructor fees and research funds over a project period of at least 6 months with substantial budgets to produce tangible outcomes. In addition, various cultural foundations and state institutions related to welfare and regional development are very interested in combining arts and culture education, so there is a need to take an interest in various research projects.
Through repeated experiences, one can secure their own original educational curriculum, specify the program, and gain opportunities to validate and test it by integrating it into other projects.
B. Organic Combinations in Various Forms Including Purposefulness
Beyond the corporate training that is already active in Korea, the potential combinations a cappella can engage in are boundless. Regional development, space operation, music therapy, popular culture, cultural marketing, experiential festival content, large-scale citizen performances, overseas dispatch programs, design, video projects, gaming, board games—the range of partners and subjects with which a cappella can collaborate remains remarkably diverse.
At every point of contact, education will inevitably accompany the process, and at such times, it would be beneficial to make attempts while keeping theoretical backgrounds and current application cases in mind.
C. Generating Tangible Outputs
As the a cappella market, which started from amateur enthusiasts, sees an increasing number of professionals, specialized knowledge is also accumulating. While there are still mostly singers and a small number of planners emerging, various types of specialized personnel must step forward in the future to establish theoretical foundations and produce validated educational materials.
Outputs for a cappella education are also outputs for the advancement of a cappella itself. Audio tracks and albums that children and students listen to will lower the barrier of entry to a cappella. Easy pieces in a cappella songbooks will give anyone an opportunity to challenge themselves with a cappella, while difficult pieces will serve as the work of leaving musical achievements in history. Theses and publications that include a cappella will widely publicize a cappella content and yield the effect of attracting diverse professionals into the world of a cappella.
