2026 레소나 글로벌 마스터클래스(RGM)의 여정은, Peder Karlsson이 열어준 ‘몸의 감각’과 Deke Sharon이 덧붙인 ‘설계와 지속’의 관점을 지나, 덴마크 출신의 지휘자이자 교육자 Jim Daus Hjernøe의 세션으로 이어졌습니다.

Jim의 강의는 (6/15) Vocal Painting(VOPA)과 (6/18) The Intelligent Choir(TIC) 두 수업으로 구성되어, “음악을 어떻게 즉시 만들고(live), 그 음악을 가능하게 하는 합창단의 상태를 어떻게 교육으로 설계하는가”를 하나의 흐름으로 보여준 시간이었습니다.

1) Vocal Painting: 악보 대신 ‘손’으로, 합창단을 즉흥의 언어로 묶다

Vocal Painting 세션은 VOPA(보컬 페인팅)를 “기교”가 아니라 실시간 음악 제작의 언어로 보여준 강의였습니다.

단원들은 악보에서 눈을 떼고 서로의 소리를 듣고 반응하며, Live-arranging(실시간 편곡)과 Live-composing(실시간 작곡)이 어떤 방식으로 가능해지는지 체감했습니다.

핵심은 단순했습니다.

- VOPA 5(기본 신호) + 펜타토닉(안전한 음 재료)로 시작하고

- Solfège(반응성 워밍업)와 Basic Steps(운동 감각적 학습)로 몸을 깨우며

- Palettes/Loop song(안전한 단편), Ghost note(가청 세분화), Transpose/Looper(전조·반복) 같은 실전 장치를 통해 즉흥을 ‘가능한 선택’으로 바꾼다는 것.

결국 VOPA는 지휘자가 더 많이 통제하기 위한 도구가 아니라, 합창단이 더 많이 듣고·선택하고·함께 책임지는 방식으로 이어졌습니다.

2) The Intelligent Choir: ‘지휘’는 합창단의 주도권과 공동 책임감을 설계하는 일

The Intelligent Choir(TIC)는 VOPA가 제대로 작동하기 위한 바탕—즉, 합창단이 '깨어있는 상태로 듣고 반응하는 문화'를 만드는 철학이었습니다.

Jim은 전통적 방식이 합창을 ‘수동적 그룹’으로 만들기 쉽다고 말하며, TIC는 단원들이 Initiative(주도권)와 Co-responsibility(공동 책임감)을 나누는 Co-creation(공동 창작)을 지향한다고 정리했습니다.

그 철학을 현장에 옮기는 프레임도 명확했습니다.

- 3 Focus Areas: Skills / VOPA / Comfort zone 확장

- 리허설 전환: 익명성 깨기(실수에 “Yes!”) + 몸으로 배우기(Step Zero·Basic step) + 원형 서기/넘기기(Circle singing·Pass it on)

- 5 Pedagogical Focus Points(손가락 비유)로 리듬·음정·블렌드·표현·퍼포먼스를 점검

그리고 이 과정이 향하는 목표가 "I am music”에 가까운 해방된 앙상블의 상태였습니다.

3) 다음으로 이어지는 연결: ‘기술’과 ‘철학’이 서로를 완성한다

VOPA가 즉흥의 언어라면, TIC는 그 언어가 잘 작동하도록 합창단의 문화를 바꾸는 교육 철학이었습니다.

Jim의 두 세션을 통해 참가자들은, “잘 부르는 법”이 단지 음정/리듬의 문제가 아니라 '듣는 방식, 책임을 나누는 방식, 몸으로 배우는 방식'까지 포함한 ‘합창단의 상태’를 만드는 일임을 체감할 수 있었습니다.

[RGM Review] Two Sessions with Jim Daus Hjernøe: Connecting “Vocal Painting” and “The Intelligent Choir” into One Philosophy

The journey of the 2026 Resona Global Masterclass (RGM) continued from the “body-based listening” opened by Peder Karlsson and the perspective of “design and sustainability” offered by Deke Sharon, and moved naturally into sessions with Danish conductor and educator Jim Daus Hjernøe.

Jim’s program consisted of (6/15) Vocal Painting (VOPA) and (6/18) The Intelligent Choir (TIC), presenting one clear flow: how to create music live, and how to design—through education—the choir state that makes it possible.

1) Vocal Painting: Using “hands” instead of a score—turning the choir into a language of improvisation

The Vocal Painting session showed VOPA not as a “trick,” but as a language for real-time music-making.

Singers looked up from the score, listened and responded to each other, and experienced how live-arranging and live-composing can actually happen.

The idea was simple:

• - Start with VOPA 5 (basic signs) + pentatonic (safe pitch material)

• - Wake up the body through Solfège (responsiveness warm-up) and Basic Steps (kinesthetic learning)

• - Use practical tools—palettes/loop songs (safe fragments), ghost notes/audible subdivisions, and transpose/looper—to make improvisation a “possible choice.”

In the end, VOPA was not a tool for the conductor to control more, but a way for the choir to listen more, choose more, and share responsibility.

2) The Intelligent Choir: Conducting means designing the choir’s initiative and co-responsibility

The Intelligent Choir (TIC) provided the foundation that allows VOPA to truly work—creating a culture where the choir stays “awake,” listening and responding. Jim noted that traditional approaches can easily produce a “passive group,” while TIC aims for co-creation, where singers share initiative and co-responsibility.

The framework for bringing this into rehearsal was clear:

• - 3 Focus Areas: Skills / VOPA / expanding the comfort zone

• - Rehearsal shifts: breaking anonymity (celebrating mistakes with “Yes!”) + learning with the body (Step Zero & Basic Step) + circle singing and “pass it on” practices

• - Using the 5 Pedagogical Focus Points (the “five fingers” model) to check rhythm, intonation, blend, interpretation, and performance

The direction of the whole process was a liberated ensemble state—close to “I am music.”

3) The connection forward: “skill” and “philosophy” complete each other

If VOPA is the language of improvisation, TIC is the educational philosophy that reshapes choir culture so that the language can truly function. Through these two sessions, participants could feel that “singing well” is not only about pitch and rhythm, but also about how we listen, how we share responsibility, and how we learn through the body—in other words, creating the state of the choir.

2026 Resona Global Masterclass（RGM）の旅は、Peder Karlssonが開いた「身体の感覚」と、Deke Sharonが加えた「設計と継続」の視点を経て、デンマーク出身の指揮者／教育者 Jim Daus Hjernøe のセッションへと続きました。

Jimのプログラムは (6/15) Vocal Painting（VOPA） と (6/18) The Intelligent Choir（TIC） の2回で構成され、「音楽をライブで生み出すこと」と、それを可能にする合唱団の状態を「教育としてどう設計するか」を一つの流れとして示してくれました。

1) Vocal Painting：楽譜ではなく“手”で、合唱を即興の言語へ

Vocal Paintingは、VOPAを「技」ではなく リアルタイムの音楽制作の言語として体験させるセッションでした。団員は楽譜から目を上げ、互いの音を聴いて反応しながら、**ライブ編曲（Live-arranging）とライブ作曲（Live-composing）**がどのように可能になるかを実感しました。

要点はシンプルです。

• - VOPA 5（基本サイン）＋ペンタトニック（安全な音素材）から始め

• - Solfège（反応性のウォームアップ）と Basic Steps（運動感覚的学習）で身体を起こし

• - Palettes/Loop song（安全な断片）、Ghost note（可聴セブンディビジョン）、**Transpose/Looper（転調・反復）**などの実践的仕掛けで、即興を「可能な選択」に変えていく

結果としてVOPAは、指揮者がより支配するための道具ではなく、合唱がより 聴き・選び・責任を分かち合う ための方法でした。

2) The Intelligent Choir：指揮とは、主導権と共同責任を設計すること

TICはVOPAが本当に機能するための土台—合唱団が「目覚めた状態で聴き、反応する文化」をつくる哲学でした。Jimは、従来の方法は合唱を「受動的なグループ」にしやすいと述べ、TICは団員が Initiative（主導権） と Co-responsibility（共同責任） を分かち合う Co-creation（共同創作） を目指すと整理しました。

現場に落とし込む枠組みも明確でした。

• - 3 Focus Areas：Skills / VOPA / Comfort zoneの拡張

• - リハーサル転換：匿名性を崩す（失敗に “Yes!”）＋身体で学ぶ（Step Zero・Basic step）＋円になって行う/渡す（Circle singing・Pass it on）

• - 5 Pedagogical Focus Points（指の比喩）でリズム、音程、ブレンド、解釈、パフォーマンスを点検

そしてその先にあるのは、「I am music」に近い解放されたアンサンブルの状態でした。

3) 次へつながる結び：技術と哲学が互いを完成させる

VOPAが即興の言語だとすれば、TICはその言語が本当に機能するように、合唱団の文化を変えていく教育哲学です。2つのセッションを通して参加者は、「上手く歌う」ことが音程やリズムだけでなく、聴き方・責任の分かち方・身体で学ぶ方法まで含む、“合唱団の状態”をつくることだと体感しました。

最终，VOPA 不是让指挥“控制更多”的工具，而是让合唱团更能 倾听、选择，并共同承担结果 的方式。

2) The Intelligent Choir：指挥是在设计主导权与共同责任

TIC是让 VOPA 真正运作起来的底层——建立一种“清醒地倾听并回应”的合唱文化。Jim 指出，传统方式容易把合唱团变成“被动群体”；而 TIC 追求的是 Co-creation（共同创作）：团员分享 Initiative（主导权）与 Co-responsibility（共同责任）。

把哲学落到排练现场的框架也非常清晰：

• - 3 Focus Areas：Skills / VOPA / 扩展舒适区

如果说 VOPA 是即兴的语言，那么 TIC 就是让这门语言真正有效的教育哲学——通过改变合唱团文化来支撑它。两节课让参与者感受到：所谓“唱得好”，不仅是音准与节奏，更包括 如何倾听、如何分担责任、如何通过身体学习——也就是在塑造“合唱团的状态”。
